Karur, Tamilnadu, India. Actor turned politician Vijay’s political rally caused a stampede and death of 41 people in Karur, India on 27/10/2025. With deep condolences for family members I would like to analyse how this crowd crush could have been avoided.

In Tamil cinema, suspense and build-up define a hero’s entry. But when such theatrics are imported into politics, the results can be catastrophic. The Karur tragedy, where over 40 lives were lost in a crowd crush at Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) rally, revealed more than just organizational lapses. It exposed a troubling pattern in how TVK conducts its mass gatherings.

𝐀 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐛𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐏𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐃𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐲𝐬

Across districts, Vijay’s convoy consistently takes hours to traverse short distances before public meetings. For instance, the journey from Namakkal to Karur, a drive of less than two hours, stretched into nearly five. Yet, after delivering his speech, Vijay managed to reach Trichy airport and fly to Chennai in roughly four hours.

If his true intent was only to address supporters, he had options: spreading his campaign across multiple days, requesting a police escort, warning fans not to tail his convoy, or even arriving the night before. Instead, his deliberate delays heightened suspense, swelled crowds, and staged a dramatic “hero’s entry.” This was not crowd enthusiasm spiralling out of control; it was political theatre crafted at the expense of safety.

𝐀𝐧 𝐔𝐧𝐫𝐮𝐥𝐲, 𝐔𝐧𝐨𝐫𝐠𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐳𝐞𝐝 𝐂𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐝 𝐂𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞

The tragedy in Karur was not an isolated incident. It was the most devastating in a series of dangerous rallies marked by chaos, fainting, and even deaths. During Vijay’s first maānādu gathering at Vikkravandi, lives were lost. In Madurai, too, fatalities were reported. In Trichy, Nagapattinam, and Namakkal, multiple fainting episodes occurred as crowds waited for hours in the heat without basic facilities. Each event carried the same warning: TVK rallies were becoming less about political dialogue and more about crowd frenzy.

Yet Vijay repeatedly encouraged unruly behaviour, smiling at fans who broke barricades, delivering punch dialogues that inflamed tempers, and framing his politics as a “Vijay vs DMK” spectacle. At no point did he set a tone of discipline, restraint, or safety.

𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐅𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐝

A political party cannot thrive on fan frenzy. A serious leader would have strengthened the cadre base, educated supporters on public order, and held second-line leaders accountable. Instead, Vijay chose punchlines over planning. His rallies resembled audio launches, where dialogue delivery mattered more than discipline. The result was predictable: chaos at every turn and tragedy waiting to unfold.

𝐊𝐚𝐫𝐮𝐫: 𝐀 𝐑𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐖𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐎𝐫𝐠𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐳𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧

Even a private function, such as a marriage, requires multi-level organisation. By contrast, the Karur rally-meeting had none. No proper entry or exit pathways were designed; no secondary leaders were present; no TVK volunteer force was visible regulating the crowd or providing water; no contingency plan existed. Had TVK deployed organisers to assess the situation, they could have directed Vijay to greet smaller groups and avoided catastrophe. Instead, Karur was treated as another stage where the hero’s entry mattered more than human lives.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐇𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐂𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐏𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐫𝐞

What works in cinema does not work in politics. In Karur, thousands, including women, children, and the elderly, were left waiting for seven hours in oppressive conditions. When Vijay finally arrived, exhausted bodies surged forward in desperation. What followed was not an accident but the culmination of systematic negligence and deliberate theatrics.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐨𝐟 𝐓𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐥 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐞

For centuries, Tamils have carried a legacy of thought, art, and intellect. This is the land of Thiruvalluvar, Bharathiyar, Ilango Adigal, and countless poets who taught the world about reason, courage, and self-respect. Tamil Nadu has long been a state that values knowledge and discipline, priding itself on awareness and cultural strength. The sight of people running amok behind a showman weakens that heritage. It reduces a proud civilisation of thinkers and builders into a crowd of followers. When blind fandom replaces reason and emotion overtakes dignity, it is not only politics that fails, but the Tamil spirit itself that is diminished.

𝐀𝐜𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐁𝐞𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐝 𝐄𝐱𝐜𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐬

Blaming “over-enthusiasm” is an evasion. Leaders who inspire devotion must also inspire discipline. Karur cannot be brushed aside as a tragic mishap; it is the direct result of treating supporters as an audience to be entertained rather than citizens to be respected.

Karur is not only a tragedy; it is a verdict on a style of politics that substitutes spectacle for substance. For Vijay and TVK, the path forward requires humility, professionalism, and above all, respect for the people whose loyalty sustains them.
