The Election Commission of India has extended the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process in Uttar Pradesh once again. Under the revised timeline, the draft electoral roll will be published on January 6, 2026, and the final list on March 6, 2026.
The SIR is a detailed exercise undertaken by the ECI to clean up electoral rolls through door-to-door verification, removal of duplicate or ineligible entries, and inclusion of eligible voters. Similar exercises have already been completed in other States. In Bihar, the revision led to the removal of about 65 lakh voters, while in Tamil Nadu, around 97.38 lakh names were deleted from the rolls following verification.
The exercise has triggered controversy, with opposition parties and civil society groups alleging that large-scale deletions may have excluded genuine voters, especially migrants and economically weaker sections. The ECI has maintained that deletions are carried out strictly as per rules, with sufficient opportunities provided for claims and objections.
In Tamil Nadu, voters can verify their details on the electoral roll through the ECI’s official portal: https://voters.eci.gov.in, using their EPIC number or personal details.
If a voter finds that their name has been left out, they can apply for inclusion by submitting Form 6 online or offline with the local Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) or Booth Level Officer (BLO).
Additionally, Form 7 is used to object to or seek deletion of a name from the electoral roll in cases such as death, permanent migration, or duplicate entries. Citizens can submit Form 7 online via the ECI portal or in person with supporting details. All applications under Forms 6 and 7 are verified by election officials before any change is made to the final voter list.
